A Warm &
Tender Tale
In one hundred years, Ma Baker has gone from a small family-owned business to a popular South African brand.
The "original" Ma Baker
In the early 1900s, Louisa Lund of Bolton in the United Kingdom was famous
for her delicious baked goods.
Filled with tradition
After travelling the world as a Grenadier Guard, Louisa’s son Norman settled
in Pietermaritzburg in South Africa. Inspired by his mother’s flair for baking,
he set up a business selling delicious pies and pastries.
Family & friends
After Norman retired, his son Wayne (and Ma Baker’s grandson) teamed up
with a Swiss-trained chef in 1987 to start wholesaling pies, sharing the Ma
Baker flavour far and wide.
Still keeping it local
In 1995 Ma Baker merged with Country Home Bakers of Durban. Thirteen
years after that and they bought another KwaZulu-Natal company, Ballards
Pies of Pinetown.
Going big while keeping the flavour of home
In March 2017, Rhodes Food Group acquired Ma Baker, and today hundreds of thousands of South Africans enjoy the brand’s wide range of pies, pastries and snacks.
